Texas License to Carry Benefits

The Texas LTC gives legal protections and multiple benefits when carrying a gun in Texas. Not only are there advantages within Texas law for having an LTC, the online class also covers material that every gun owner is responsible to know and is crucial to be aware of. Permitless carry, or constitutional carry, does not effect the LTC in Texas. Every responsible gun owner should still have an LTC for the reasons listed above.

3 Simple Steps to Get Your LTC

1. Take this Online LTC Class

The online class is a total of 4 hours, required by Texas DPS, and can be taken at your own pace. You will be issued an LTC-101 certificate immediately upon completion.

2. Proficiency Demonstration

After the online class, Texas DPS requires every student* to complete the proficiency demonstration. This consists of the shooting qualification and range instruction with an LTC instructor.

3. Application and Fingerprinting

Once the training is completed, the online application (through DPS) and fingerprinting (Identigo) is completed. DPS will mail your license to you once completed!

The Texas License to Carry a Handgun, or commonly known as the concealed handgun license and concealed carry permit, does not go away with the passage of permitless carry (also referred to as constitutional carry) in Texas. The LTC remains the best option for concealed and open carry in the state and is extremely beneficial to have if you plan to carry a handgun.

A few benefits of an LTC include:

  • Carry in More Loations
  • Legal Protections
  • Trespass Protections
  • Carry in 37 States
  • Campus Carry
  • School Zone Carry
  • Law Enforcement Interactions
  • Knowledge of Gun Laws
  • No Background Checks for Gun Purchases

This online LTC course will cover the following topics:

  1. Weapon Law
    – Laws that relate to weapons and to the use of deadly force
  2. Handgun Use and Safety
    – Including use of holders and methods to ensure the secure carrying of handguns
  3. Non-Violent Dispute Resolution
    – Deescalation techniques including communication skills and situational awareness
  4. Safe Storage Practices
    – handgun storage options and law relating to storage

All of the material provided relates back to carrying a pistol in public in order to be as safe as possible. Whether you intend to carry a gun or not, this course is great for anyone interested in learning more about the above topics.

Every LTC applicant, with some exceptions, must complete the proficiency demonstration after the completion of the online LTC class. Students have 2 years from the completion of this online LTC class to get the proficiency demonstration completed and submitted to Texas DPS with the LTC application.

The proficiency demonstration consists of the shooting qualification and range instruction. This is done in person with any LTC instructor in Texas. Please contact Security Matters Training for information about scheduling a proficiency demonstration after this online class is completed.

Active duty military and veterans with range cards that are dated from within the last 10 years may be exempt from the proficiency demonstration and only need to complete this online class. The range cards will be submitted to Texas DPS after the LTC application is completed.
